Giuliani Ordered to Pay $148 Million in Damages for Defaming Georgia Election Workers

A federal jury has ruled that Rudy Giuliani must pay $148 million in damages to Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss, former Georgia election workers.

The jury found Giuliani liable for defamation and causing emotional distress after falsely accusing Freeman and Moss of manipulating ballots in the 2020 election. The damages include about $16 million each for defamation claims and $20 million each for emotional distress. An additional $75 million in punitive damages was awarded to deter similar smear campaigns in the future.

The jury’s decision followed a four-day trial, during which the only task was to determine the damage awards, as U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell had already ruled Giuliani liable for failing to comply with orders to turn over evidence. Giuliani, facing dire financial straits, has indicated plans to appeal the verdict. Freeman and Moss, key figures in two criminal cases against Donald Trump, may face challenges in receiving the massive judgment.

Giuliani, who served as the head of Trump’s legal defense team, spread false allegations against Freeman and Moss, contributing to threats and harassment they endured. The verdict underscores accountability for attempts to undermine the 2020 election. Despite Giuliani’s casual response, stating, “I don’t regret a damn thing,” the ruling sends a strong message about the consequences of baseless claims that can harm individuals and democracy.

The trial shed light on Giuliani’s tactics, and the damages awarded serve as a notable rebuke, emphasizing the need for responsibility in public statements. The case not only holds Giuliani accountable but also raises questions about the broader consequences for those who attempt to subvert the democratic process through false narratives.
