New York lawmakers have agreed to take away New York Governor Andrew Cuomo‘s pandemic-related emergency powers as he faces two ongoing controversies.
The bill to limit his powers comes as Governor Cuomo faces an investigation into sexual misconduct claims and accusations that his administration mismanaged COVID-19 nursing home deaths.
The COVID-19 emergency powers were granted to Gov. Cuomo last year and were set to expire on April 30. The powers allowed him to pass executive orders quickly.
“I think everyone understands where we were back in March and where we are now,” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. “We certainly see the need for a quick response, but also want to move toward a system of increased oversight and review. The public deserves to have checks and balances.”
The state legislature plans to keep in place orders related to managing the spread of COVID-19 and orders that outline the vaccination process for at least 30 days.
