Obama Defends Omar, Accuses Trump Of Weaponizing The Government

In a lengthy post on X, former president Barack Obama defended Rep. Ilhan Omar against what he called a targeted campaign by the Trump administration, accusing it of weaponizing the federal government against her because of her political beliefs and speech.

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota,” Obama wrote.

Obama laid out the citizenship facts as he sees them. Omar came to the United States with her father when she was 12. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. Because Omar was 17 at the time, she became a citizen automatically. Had she been 18, she would have had to apply separately. According to Obama, the administration’s entire theory rests on the unsubstantiated claim that she was actually 18 when her father naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen at all.

“The Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized,” Obama wrote.

He described the tactics. Federal agents raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone, all to uncover what he called “a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago.”

The probe so far

Omar’s attorneys have pushed back on the investigation. Last Thursday, they sent the Department of Justice a letter calling the probe “vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated,” disputing the legality of the October 12 search of her DC-area home and demanding the return of seized property, according to reporting on the letter. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told the Charlie Kirk Show the investigation has a “strong case” and said officials expect a grand jury. As of Sunday, no charges had been filed.

The pattern

Obama connected Omar’s case to what he described as a broader pattern under President Trump: the Justice Department going after those the president considers political enemies, from the Attorney General of New York to the former head of the FBI to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, Obama wrote, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and he predicted the same outcome here. The damage, he argued, is already being done: Omar’s life turned upside down, legal bills piling up, time spent fighting what he called unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.

“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views,” Obama wrote. “Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will” stop with her.

Why it matters for us

A sitting congresswoman is being investigated over a disputed citizenship theory from two decades ago, and a former president just called it political retaliation. For a community that knows exactly how selective enforcement works, this one hits close. The question isn’t whether you agree with Omar’s politics. It’s whether the government gets to come after anyone who talks back.
