Donald Trump Jr.’s lavish Bahamas wedding was partly financed by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, according to records and interviews reviewed by ProPublica.
Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for the May wedding, including the rental of a private island where guests stayed and a fireworks display. Payments were made through an International Boxing Association-affiliated entity based in Dubai, according to the investigation.
Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, later confirmed Kremlev’s role, describing him as a friend who “very generously hosted” two nights of their wedding celebrations. They called the support an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift” and said it had no political motive.
The financial relationship has drawn scrutiny because of Kremlev’s connections to the Russian government and his access to the Trump family.
A Putin-Linked Benefactor
Kremlev is president of the International Boxing Association, an organization that has faced governance and financial controversies and was removed from the Olympic boxing structure by the International Olympic Committee in 2023.
The IBA has previously received financial backing from Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom. The association’s current relationship with Gazprom has been disputed, with Kremlev’s representatives saying the sponsorship agreement expired years ago.
Kremlev also received Russia’s Order of Friendship from Putin in April, shortly before the wedding. Ukrainian authorities have sanctioned him, citing his relationship with Putin and Russian security services.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev was in China around the time of the wedding as part of a group accompanying Putin, although Kremlev’s representatives disputed describing him as part of Putin’s official delegation.
Kremlev’s representatives said he and Trump Jr. first met several years ago and described their relationship as friendly. Trump Jr.’s spokesperson said the two men met through a mutual friend in the hunting community and share interests in boxing and outdoor activities.
National Security Questions
The payments have raised concerns among former U.S. counterintelligence officials, particularly because Kremlev appears to have established a personal relationship with the president’s son while maintaining close ties to Russia’s political and sports establishment.
Frank Montoya Jr., a former senior FBI counterintelligence official, told ProPublica that providing such a substantial personal gift could create an expectation of reciprocity. Holden Triplett, who served as a counterintelligence director on the National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said Russian intelligence has historically sought relationships with American officials and their relatives and that money can be used to cultivate access.
There is no public evidence that Kremlev’s wedding payments were made at the direction of the Russian government or that Trump Jr. provided anything to Kremlev in return.
Kremlev’s representatives said he has never discussed political matters with Trump Jr. or other American friends and said his relationship with Trump Jr. is personal.
Relationship Developed Through Boxing
The relationship became more visible in 2025, when the IBA brought Trump Jr. to Istanbul for a panel discussion on boxing. Kremlev and Trump Jr. appeared together at the event, alongside boxer Manny Pacquiao and Rasheda Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali. Trump Jr.’s representatives said he was not paid for the appearance.
Kremlev had also written to President Trump after his second inauguration, expressing interest in working with the administration on Olympic sports issues ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
The IBA later said Kremlev and Trump Jr. intended their relationship to lead to additional joint initiatives.
The connection comes against the backdrop of Trump Jr.’s previous involvement in a controversial 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower. That meeting became a major focus of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, although the Mueller investigation did not establish sufficient evidence to charge Trump Jr. with a crime.
Questions Remain About the Payments
It remains unclear why Kremlev chose to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on Trump Jr.’s wedding or whether the relationship will lead to additional business or political ties.
Trump Jr.’s representatives said he could have afforded the wedding himself and characterized Kremlev’s contribution as a personal gift from a friend.
The White House, Russian government and Jared Kushner, who has been involved in U.S. negotiations concerning Russia and Ukraine, did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment.
The disclosure adds a previously unreported financial connection between a prominent member of the Trump family and a Russian businessman with longstanding ties to Putin’s political and sports establishment. Whether the relationship carries any broader implications remains unresolved.
